About The Star and Garter
The origins of The Star and Garter date from the early 18th century when a small inn was established on the site. This was transformed into a fashionable hotel in the 19th century when Thackeray, Tennyson, Dickens and Ruskin were frequent visitors. Dickens also celebrated the publication of David Copperfield at the hotel in 1851. Royal guests included Queen Victoria, Napoleon III, Empress Eugenie and King Louis Philippe of France. The present building, the former headquarters of the Royal Star & Garter charity, a 2.5 acre landmark site, was designed by Sir Edwin Cooper, who received a knighthood in recognition of his achievements.
The appointed architects are Paul Davis + Partners, chosen for their outstanding track record with conservation projects including The Royal Hospital Chelsea and Cadogan Hall in Chelsea. Landscape architect and historian Todd Longstaffe-Gowan is leading the landscape design team. Todd is President of the London Parks and Gardens Trust, as well as gardens adviser to Hampton Court Palace.
