“Left Swipe Dat” Fans Show Creativity; “Left Swipe” Smoking
“It’s great to see so many people creatively use their social influence to do something good,” said Cas Marburger, the social media manager for truth. “These videos are amazing and funny, but they also show we’re collectively sending a huge ‘Left Swipe’ to tobacco.”
Launched during the GRAMMY Awards, “Left Swipe Dat” calls attention to the impact of smoking images. Research about an online dating app showed that app users not only consider smoking deadly, they think it’s unattractive. Since the video’s release, #leftswipedat has been a number one trending topic across social platforms worldwide. The video has been viewed more than 39 million times and “Left Swipe Dat” now appears in the Urban Dictionary.
While the Lip Sync Dat videos are clever and fun, left swiping smoking is serious business. One in three youth who continue to smoke into adulthood will die from a tobacco related illness. The U.S. Surgeon General estimates that’s 5.6 million children who are alive today but will die prematurely due to tobacco use. That’s why truth is working to put the issue of tobacco use front and center in the minds of youth.
