Stockholm, 6 December 2016 — Eugenia Bieto, Director General of ESADE Business & Law School, has been appointed Chair of the CEMS Global Alliance. The announcement was made at the CEMS Annual Events, hosted by the exclusive Swedish CEMS member school, the Stockholm School of Economics, which also saw 1281 CEMS graduates from 65 countries receiving their diploma both on and off stage. A committee of academic, corporate and social representatives from the CEMS network nominated her for this position.
“We are very happy to welcome Professor Bieto as our new CEMS Chair”, said Roland Siegers, CEMS Executive Director. “Her appointment is coming at an important point in CEMS history, with the adoption of a vision statement, streamlining of alumni affairs and at a moment when we are enhancing our globalization strategy, projects all successfully started by our former Chair”.
A paradigm shift in business education
“I am very honoured”, said Professor Bieto. “It is a great responsibility and a privilege to accept this mandate at a time when business schools are facing new trends that are moving towards a future that calls for a paradigm shift in management education. The combination of globalization and the technological revolution has affected all and transformed the business models of most companies. Business schools are no exception”, she added. Throughout her career, Professor Bieto has championed entrepreneurship and innovation through the creation and management of new companies; the introduction of strategic innovation programmes in companies; the development of new business lines; and designing and applying public policies encouraging entrepreneurship.
The newly appointed CEMS Chair is “committed to shaping the leaders of tomorrow, people who are open to teamwork and collaboration, and who are able to reflect and think critically, unafraid to take on challenges outside their comfort zone, used to working in an environment marked by horizontal decision-making, and able to manage diversity. We aim at creating the next generation of managers, people with the ability and courage to make decisions in environments of constant uncertainty and who are willing to reinvent themselves”, she asserted.
Professor Andrea Sironi, former Rector of Bocconi University and CEMS Chairman 2014-2016, oversaw initiatives to strengthen excellence in teaching via blended learning and multi-stakeholder practice sharing communities, said “these two years as CEMS Chairman, while challenging and demanding, have been extremely stimulating, inspiring and rich of great human experiences”. About his successor, Professor Sironi described as “an experienced academic leader and I am sure she will lead CEMS to new ambitious goals and results. I wish her the possibility to enjoy the same exciting experiences and satisfactions that I had.” He added, “leading the greatest management education alliance in the world offers a unique opportunity to interact with the finest students from all over the world, cooperate with the best management schools, learn from some of the world most successful corporations, and cooperate with a rich and lively network of alumni”.
