HUNDREDS OF ANYTIME FITNESS GYM OWNERS ARE RESERVING PARKING SPACES FOR THEIR MEMBERS – AS FAR AWAY FROM THE GYMS AS POSSIBLE
“Every Step Counts” campaign stresses the importance of moving throughout the day
PR Newswire, Woodbury, MN, November 30, 2016
Spending 30 minutes on a treadmill or an elliptical machine a few times each week is not the key to a healthy lifestyle. What’s more important is getting out of your chair, or off the couch, and moving throughout the day – preferably at least once an hour. That’s the logic behind Anytime Fitness’ new “Every Step Counts” campaign – which features reserved parking spots for its members as far away as possible from the gym, in the far corners of the parking lot.
“We care what you do outside the gym every bit as much as when you’re inside one of our facilities,” said Chuck Runyon, CEO and co-founder of Anytime Fitness. “Three hours of rigorous exercise a week is great. But what you do during the other 165 hours each week will really determine whether you’re healthy or not. If you sit in a chair and stare at a computer screen for eight hours a day, without moving every hour or so, then research* shows you’re much more likely to develop a long list of preventable chronic diseases. Sitting too much is the new smoking.”

Nearly a dozen Anytime Fitness gyms in the Minneapolis-St.Paul, MN area launched the company’s “Every Step Counts” campaign in mid-October. Hundreds of additional Anytime Fitness gyms – in areas like New Orleans, Tampa-St. Petersburg, Dallas-Fort Worth and Denver – will be joining the campaign in the next few weeks by painting “Reserved for Anytime Fitness members” parking spaces several football fields away from their front doors.

“We know that not moving for long periods of time each day is linked to all sorts of health problems, like heart disease, diabetes, and several types of cancer,” said Cliff Gray, who owns an Anytime Fitness gym in Bloomington, MN. “That’s why we’re reminding our members to get up and move several times a day – not just when they’re in the gym. It can be as simple as walking a short distance to speak with a co-worker instead of sending an email. But it’s important. Humans weren’t meant to sit all day.”

Anytime Fitness, the fastest-growing fitness club chain in the world, has opened an average of nearly 300 new gyms a year for the past nine years while expanding into 28 countries. During that time, the company has positioned itself as “friendly, convenient and affordable.” But today’s fitness consumers demand more than a convenient place to exercise. They expect the coaching and support that’s needed to achieve significant health improvements.
“Anytime Fitness set the industry standard for consumer convenience by providing our members unlimited access to more than 3,000 gyms, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year – but we can do more,” said Dave Mortensen, president and co-founder of Anytime Fitness. “Our recent acquisition of PumpOne [the world’s largest exercise image and video library], coupled with the upcoming launch of our new digital platforms, will allow us to provide our members personalized coaching and workout routines anytime, anywhere, inside or outside the gym.”
