7 Easy Steps to Creating a D.I.Y. Herb Garden
Step 1: Rinse a half-gallon milk or juice carton, and let it dry for 24 hours. Set aside one carton for each herb—basil, chives, thyme, parsley, mint and rosemary successfully grow in carton planters.
Step 2: Cut the carton in half. Using a knife, slit drainage holes in the top half of the carton.
Step 3: Turn the top half of the carton upside down, and place it in the bottom half of the carton. The bottom half of the carton will catch extra water that runs through during watering.
Step 4: Decorate the carton planter. Easy decorating ideas include painting, wrapping with decorative adhesive craft paper, or adding embellishments such as twine, ribbon, rhinestones or lace.
Step 5: Fill the carton planter with soil.
Step 6: Plant the herbs (one in each carton), and add labels.
Step 7: Place the milk carton planter in a sunny window and water. Each carton will yield fresh herbs all year long with proper care.
